The Makita MAC2400 air compressor is powered by a quiet, but powerful  2.5 HP motor and made of cast iron. The cast iron cylinder is easily removed providing additional pump life. It also provides durability and excellent performance (increased compression) while able to be used for a number of projects.

This model has a lot going for it than just its good looks. With a low 1720 RPM rating and weighted Intake Air Filter system unlike any other, this unit is superior to its competition. With 4.2CFM @ 90PSI it comes with a lever handled ball valve drain system which eliminates condensation which accumulates inside the tank. The unique finned discharge tubing raises the elimination of heat while decreasing moisture in the lines.

Ease of Use

It is important to place the compressor in a dirt-free, waterless and well-ventilated area. When you Makita MAC2400first start up the compressor, let it run for 20-30 minutes to break it in to make sure the piston rings are correctly seated and the bearings are completely lubricated.  The on/off switch, regulator knob and connections are all up front and easy to reach.

Size/Dimensions/Weight

The unit itself is Length 20” x Width 18” x Height 18.75” and weighs 80 pounds. Pay attention as this unit is certainly on the heavy side.  However, because of its fairly square design, you can easily put it on a small wheeled cart with an attachment to hold your extra hoses and move it much more easily.

Performance/Pressure

The 4.2 gallon twin-stacked tank maintains a running pressure of 130 PSI, and sends 40 PSI (4.8 SCFM) and 90 PSI (4.2 SCFM), sufficient to operate two nailers.

The SCFM (standard cubic feet per minute) describes the amount of air that is delivered in one minute.  For most household tasks, the maximum amount of air delivered isn’t necessarily important.  If you’re refilling a tire, whether the unit puts out more air in one minute or not will only determine how long it will take you to refill the tire but it will still get the work done.

For other uses, the air output can impact the performance of attached pneumatic tools.  If a tool needs a higher rating in order to cause enough spin or volume, then this compressor wouldn’t work with that tool.

For example, a finish sprayer used to do large jobs might require much more flow than 4.8 SCFM at 40PSI.  The manuals for the tools you intend to use will tell you their SCFM requirements. The cut-in pressure on the MAC2400 is 100 PSI.  That’s the point at which the motor will kick on to build the pressure back up.  It cuts out at 130 PSI.  The recycle time takes place in under a minute.

Pump Type

The MAC2400 comes with an oil-lubricated pump and outfitted with a large automotive type filter for greater air intake and superior efficiency.

While models that require oil need more maintenance, they’re known to last longer so it’s a small trade off of your time for a unit that you won’t need to replace as quickly.

It’s not difficult to change the oil, though.  Just remove the plug, drain into an appropriate container, replace the plug and refill with the right oil.  The user manual tells you the oil viscosity you need based on the average temperatures in your area.

There is a site window so you can keep an eye on your oil and it’s best to get in the habit of checking that with each use.  There is no low oil indicator so that window needs to become your new best friend.

Motor/HP/Tank Size & Gallons

This compressor comes with a manual reset thermal overload protector switch so that if the motor for some reason overheats, the overload protector will shut off the motor preventing damage.

The Makita MAC2400 has a powerful yet quiet 2.5 HP motor, so that wherever you use it, you won’t get a headache.

This is a 50% duty cycle compressor.  After 30 minutes of run time, you should let the unit sit unused for 30 minutes.  If you operate it for longer periods than that without sufficient recovery times, you’ll be causing increased wear and tear on the motor and the unit will not last as long as it should.

If you need a compressor that will run for longer periods of time for heavy duty, continuous work, you should look at a different model.

Consumer Reviews

I read better than 32 consumer reviews on the net to find out the good and not so good on this air compressor. This one is a winner as it gets exceptional ratings. It is highly recommended by almost every customer that bought it.

“I needed a compressor to put up a fence, install mouldings and refinish my basement. After a TON of research, I settled on this Makita. I am very pleased. It’s quiet, very well built and easy to use. So far I’ve run a framing nailer and brad nailer with no problems.

I’ve read other reviews that speak to the weight of this unit. Well, it’s a compressor and they ARE heavy. That’s just how it is. Especially a high-quality compressor like this one. It’s not a tinny piece of junk and there’s only plastic on it where it makes total sense – no where else. Makita also puts a NICE molded rubber handle on it that doesn’t shift or move one bit. The thing’s built like a tank and looks great. I have yet to trip a 15-Amp breaker with it.”

Pros and Cons

Pros: Quiet operating twin stack. Controls are conveniently placed. Powerful. Two connections on the front panel to run two tools at once. Large (big) rubber feet so it stays put. Gauges on the front panel are easy to read and regulator is easy to adjust. Very well constructed. Easy to change oil since drain plug and fill are easily accessed. No leaks – holds its air pressure. Compact cage design protects most of the components. Centered molded rubber handle for balance. Good recovery time.

Cons: Weight. Heavy to carry around – the solution is to build a small wheel cart. But comparable to compressors in its class. Cheesy tiny quality air filter that hangs off the side Plastic air hoses. Access 3 sides (the front panel, the right side for the on/off switch and the rear for the drain valve). Manual is not very good – it does a poor job of describing how to assemble some parts – the solution is to download a PDF copy from Amazon.
